Should you get UV lights to kill AC mold?
Somebody found mold at your air handler. Now somebody else wants to sell you a light. UV lights for AC mold are one of the most pitched add-ons in Florida HVAC work, usually next to PCO air purifiers. The units cost real money. Before you pay, you should know what the research says they can and cannot do.

Do UV lights actually kill AC mold?
A UV lamp can help keep a clean, dry coil clean. What it cannot do is fix a mold problem. The EPA's guide to home air cleaners says research "has not yet shown that other technologies such as plasma, photocatalytic oxidation, or ultraviolet (UV) light can remove gases effectively in portable residential air cleaners." On mold, the same EPA guide is blunt: air cleaners and HVAC filters "do not address the cause of mold" and will not fix a mold and moisture problem. Mold at your air handler means moisture at your air handler. Fix that first.

UV lights vs PCO devices: what each one does
The two products get pitched together but work differently:
- UV (ultraviolet germicidal) lamps shine on a surface or into moving air. Mounted at the coil, they irradiate whatever sits in the light's line of sight. Air moving past gets a fraction of a second of exposure.
- PCO (photocatalytic oxidation) devices pass air over a UV-lit catalyst that is supposed to break down contaminants. The EPA's assessment above covers both: the residential evidence is not there yet for gas removal.

The ozone problem nobody mentions at the sales counter
Some air-cleaning devices create a lung irritant while claiming to clean your air. The EPA warns against air cleaners and HVAC filters that intentionally produce ozone, and notes that ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, plasma units, and UV lights without adequate lamp coatings may all have the potential to emit it.
Ozone generators sold as air cleaners are a harder no. Per the EPA, no federal agency has approved those devices for use in occupied spaces. If a quote includes an ozone-producing unit for a home someone lives in, that line item deserves a second opinion.
Why the coil grows mold in the first place
The EPA identifies condensation on or near AC cooling coils as a major factor in moisture contamination of duct systems. In Florida, your coil condenses water all day, every day, most of the year. Spores are already present in every home; the EPA is clear that they cannot be eliminated from indoor environments. Give them a wet surface and darkness, and they grow.
That is the logic problem with leading the fix with a light. The moisture that fed the colony is still being produced on schedule. Controlling moisture, per the EPA, is the most effective way to prevent biological growth in ducts. Kill the dampness and the system stops feeding new growth, light or no light.
What the EPA says fixes AC mold for real
Pulled from EPA guidance, in order of what matters:
- Find and fix the moisture source. That is the EPA's stated fix for mold problems: remove the moisture, then clean up the mold.
- Remove the growth that exists. Substantial visible mold inside sheet-metal ducts is one of the few conditions where the EPA says duct cleaning is justified. Routine annual duct cleaning is not an EPA recommendation.
- Replace what cannot be cleaned. Once fiberglass duct liner is contaminated with mold, EPA guidance says cleaning is not sufficient to prevent regrowth. The material should be removed and replaced. This is the finding that changes the scope on flex duct and lined air handlers.
- Remember the runtime math. An in-duct device only treats air while the blower runs, and HVAC systems typically run less than 25 percent of the time in season.
That last point quietly undercuts most in-duct gadget pitches. Whatever the device does, it does nothing for three quarters of the day.
When a UV light is worth it in a Florida air handler
After remediation, on a clean system, a coil-mounted UV lamp can be a fair maintenance layer. It maintains a clean surface. It does not create one. Pair it with the two things that actually control mold. First, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent per the EPA. Second, keep the condensate line draining so the drip pan never stands wet.
The EPA adds one more habit worth stealing. If condensation shows up on windows, walls, or pipes, dry the surface and cut the moisture source fast. Condensation is the same warning light for the whole house that a sweating coil is for the air handler. A dry system has nothing for a lamp to fight.
